THE PROBLEM
This was a class project in which we needed to redesign a book cover, including two sleeves that folded inside the book. I chose to update the cover of one of the books in the Arsène Lupin series, the French version of Sherlock Holmes from the 19th century.
MY SOLUTION
I wanted the overall feel of the cover to be dark and mysterious, as Lupin himself is; so through Photoshop I created a gentleman and shrouded him, then used that photo to obscure the text on the front cover. I also took elements of that photo and extended it onto the first inside sleeve, which not only makes a cool connection, but also adds some interest to be able to break up the paragraph.
With the front focusing on "thief," I used the back cover to accentuate the "gentleman" persona, using ornaments and gold textures. The ornaments give a nod to the classic era in which this book was first written, when covers would often don that type of design.
FOnt I knew the body font would be a classic serif, and I went with a classic look with small uppercase letters. To pair with that, I found a bold sans-serif font; I particularly liked the slickness of the "S" in this font, which to me represented Lupin's ability to slip away from the police and adds the unexpected in an otherwise unsuspecting font.
